Nature inspired Metal Art. Jellyfish Earrings, Pendant and Card Case by THE RAVE 'N' IRON.
I wanted to know how Jellyfish have been portrayed in jewelry and fashion design, home decor and architecture, as well as to solve the mysteries of what jellyfish symbolize, depict in dreams and represent as totem animals.
In order to do my research I first had to sift through all of the scientific wonders surrounding the 1,500 known species of these 'oldest living creatures in the world' which range in size from just 1 millimetre up to an enormous 2 meters in bell diameter and who exist in all of the levels - of all of the oceans - on Earth.
I discovered that their lifespan could be as brief as a few hours or as lengthy as several months, depending on their size.
I marvelled at the many phantasmagorical photographs of neon, glow in the dark, colourful, colourless, patterned, plain, gelatinous and glorious jellies. I goggled at blooms of up to 100,000 individuals as well as human divers being dwarfed by enormous ghostly blobs.
I waded through pictures of brutal jellyfish stings, unappetizing cuisine, ridiculous hats, funky dresses, futuristic spaceships, fantastical lighting, imaginary undersea cities, elaborate tattoos, realistic jellyfish glasswork and even a 600 foot long jellyfish crop circle.
An interesting and visually stunning topic, indeed!
But, lets face it, what we really want to know is what the jellyfish means symbolically, to us. We humans know that the whole wide world revolves around our very important lives, right?
Well, here's where we could learn a thing or two from jellies, who barely have the ability to move on their own and depend entirely upon the currents of the ocean and the direction of the wind for their sustenance. They move in harmony with the forces of nature - that's the way they must go - with the flow.

Symbolism surrounding the jellyfish include inner strength, vulnerability, transparency and truth. Their transparency teaches that we have enormous power within us to draw upon, even while seemingly in the depths of darkness, while through their sting we see that even though they seem quite vulnerable, they have the power to protect themselves.
Jellyfish in dreams could represent an unconscious and painful memory emerging, a measure of hostility in your waking life or suggest feelings of inadequacy and poor self-esteem; a situation where you feel you can't assert yourself. Jellyfish dreams could either warn you of the dangers of the temptation of beauty, represent a nuisance in your life or warn you of an underlying threat lurking in the depths...
As a totem animal jellyfish medicine shows us the importance of maintaining balance in all areas of life, the value of 'floating' through exhausting emotional times and the use of softness instead of rigidity. We are taught to untangle ourselves from the uncertainty of life and move toward acceptance and faith in the knowledge that the world will provide all that is necessary for our survival. In studying the jellyfish we can learn to stop drifting aimlessly but actively cross the currents toward our goals.
In conclusion, JELLYFISH are not only a really cool looking Design Theme, they're wiggley ways are something to aspire to...
